"The Fisherman of Halicarnassus" ( 1890 - 1973 ) , Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli

He was a Turkish writer of novels, short-stories and essays, as well as being a keen ethnographer and travelogue. He studied History at Oxford University and graduated
in 1908.

In the early years of the Turkish Republic, he was sent to a three year exile to Bodrum which was an isolated remote fishing village at that time. He called the exile a" Blue Exile ".He fell in love with Bodrum and that love irrevocably changed his life and the life of Bodrum.

As you approach Bodrum by car, at the entrance on your right side, notice the big board with The Fisherman of Halicarnassus's advance warning about Bodrum:

" Hello, if you come to this top of the hill you will see Bodrum.
Don't think that you will return as the very same person as you came.
To all those who came before you happened the same.
They lost their heart in Bodrum and left it."

He made a life for himself with local fisherman and their families. He has written many books about the region and life of the fisherman and sponge divers and caught the attention of Turkish intellectuals. He is largely credited for the promotion of Bodrum.

He passed away in 1973 in Izmir and wanted to be buried in his beloved Bodrum.
The museum of the Fisherman of Halicarnassus is located in Gumbet.
